👋 Introduction
EchoListen ("we", "our", or "the app") is a voice training application that helps users practice language pronunciation through timed recording and playback loops. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your data.
By using EchoListen, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy.
📋 Information We Collect
We collect the minimum data necessary to provide the service:
- Account information: Your email address and unique user ID, provided when you sign in via Google or email through Firebase Authentication.
- Usage data: Your remaining daily AI credits, the date of your last credit reset, and your teacher preference settings (language, voice, category).
- App settings: Your preferred practice mode, interval duration, and language selections — stored to restore your preferences between sessions.
- Practice results: For each scored Shadowing take we keep the result of the analysis — the practice phrase you were given, your score, and for each word whether it was pronounced correctly, plus a short phonetic note of what the AI heard when it was not. This is what lets the app tell you which sounds you find difficult and suggest what to practise next. The recording itself is never kept — only this short text summary of it.

- To authenticate you and maintain your account across sessions
- To track your daily AI credit balance and reset it automatically each day
- To save and restore your teacher and practice settings
- To identify which sounds you find difficult from your scored takes, and to suggest phrases that practise them
- To generate AI teacher audio in Shadowing mode (with your explicit consent, text phrases are processed to synthesize speech audio)
- To segment and analyze speech scripts in Speech Pro mode (with your explicit consent, texts or scripts you paste are processed by AI to be split into practice segments)
- To evaluate voice recordings in Shadowing mode to calculate pronunciation similarity scores and compile daily Tutor Reports (recordings are processed transiently in-memory and are not stored)

We do not use your data for advertising or profiling, and we do not sell it.
📊 Usage Analytics & Crash Reporting
We use Google Analytics for Firebase and Firebase Crashlytics to understand how EchoListen is used and to find bugs. This records events such as when a practice session starts and finishes, which mode and language you chose, your pronunciation scores, and when the app crashes.
We never send your voice recordings, the text you paste, the practice phrases you were given, or any transcript of what you said to our analytics provider. Analytics events contain only numbers, mode names, language names, and scores.
Crash reports may include a technical error message and stack trace so we can diagnose the fault. These are automatically generated by the app and do not contain your practice content.
🔗 Third-Party Services
EchoListen relies on the following Google services to function:
- Firebase Authentication — manages sign-in and account security
- Cloud Firestore — stores your profile, credits, settings, and the written results of your scored practice takes in a private, rules-protected database
- Firebase Cloud Functions & Google Gemini AI — processes user text scripts, generates teacher speech audio (TTS), and evaluates Shadowing voice recordings for pronunciation scoring using Google's Gemini AI service
- Firebase Hosting — serves the application
- Google Analytics for Firebase — records how the app is used, as described above
- Firebase Crashlytics — reports crashes and errors so they can be fixed
These services are operated by Google LLC and are governed by Google's Privacy Policy. We confirm that Google Gemini AI provides equal protection of your data.
Apart from the Google services listed above, we do not share your data with any other third parties or with advertisers.
🔒 Data Security
Your account data in Firestore is protected by security rules that ensure only you — when authenticated — can read or write your own data. No other user or unauthorized party can access your records.
All data is transmitted over HTTPS. Firebase infrastructure is SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certified.
🗂️ Data Retention
Your account data (email, credits, settings) and the written results of your scored practice takes are retained for as long as you maintain an active account. Voice recordings submitted to third-party APIs in advanced AI modes are processed statelessly in-memory and are never stored persistently on our servers or by third-party providers — only the text summary of the analysis is kept, and deleting your account removes it with the rest of your data.
If you choose to save recordings to your Practice History, they are stored locally on your device (IndexedDB) and remain entirely under your control. If you delete your account, all cloud-stored account and usage data is permanently removed within 30 days.
👶 Children's Privacy
EchoListen is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take steps to delete that information.
⚖️ Your Rights & Data Deletion
Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your data:
- Access: Request a copy of the data we hold about you
- Correction: Request correction of inaccurate data
- Deletion: Request deletion of your account and all associated data
- Portability: Request your data in a portable format
How to delete your data: You can delete your account and all associated data directly inside the app under the Account Settings menu. Alternatively, you can request account and data deletion by contacting us at admin@interestingmachines.com. Once requested, your account and all cloud-stored practice histories will be permanently deleted from our databases within 30 days.
📝 Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
